Swept Away

I'm told that during the summer people wearing life jackets float down the Otonabee River near Burleigh Falls. We even know people (including children) that have done this and lived to tell the tale. But it isn't something anyone would try at this spot. Or most certainly not in spring - especially the wet year this photograph was taken. The river reached unusually high levels that year. At a cottage we rented nearby the water was so high it was lapping at the front of the building. Overnight I would awaken to gurgling sounds and step in a puddle - water was somehow coming up the shower drain. At first light we would be back standing at the edge of the falls where Ron took this image. He would be so engrossed in what he was doing that he wouldn't even notice the fish that leaped out of the raging water and flopped about on the rock right beside him. The noise of the water was too loud for Ron to hear me trying to tell him about the fish before it disappeared back into the water. A Great Blue Heron fishing on the opposite side of the river also amazed me. How did it manage to stand so still in that ragging torrent? It was certainly a morning to be in awe of nature.
